What are early childhood supports?
Early childhood intervention is about giving infants and young children with developmental delays and/or disability the best possible start in life. This service aims to provide young children with experiences and opportunities to build skills and help them participate meaningfully with others and their environments.
This is achieved by providing access to a range of specialised supports to promote child development, family and child wellbeing and participation in the community.
Early childhood supports involve a range of professionals and the family working together as a team to understand your child and family’s needs, set clear and achievable goals and develop a coordinated plan to achieve these goals.
At Care Pathways Australia we use a team around the child approach to early childhood supports.
You can read more about the NDIS and the early childhood approach on the NDIS website.
Why is early childhood support so important?
Children are learning about themselves and their world from the day they are born, and they learn very quickly in the first years of life. Research has shown that early experiences can have a big impact on brain development and can shape a child’s life into adulthood. For children experiencing developmental delays it is essential that they have access to intervention as early as possible. This has been shown to have a significant positive impact on their learning and development and can lead to fewer challenges later in life.
Who can access the NDIS early childhood approach?
The NDIS early childhood approach is funded by the NDIS for children under 6 years old with developmental delay and under 9 years old with a diagnosed disability. Children must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and require support from more than one professional working as a team (e.g. speech pathologist and physiotherapist).
