Speech Pathology

Speech Pathologists specialise in supporting people to improve their communication.
Communication is the basis of a broad range of skills including: self-regulation or managing our own behaviour when dealing with emotions; social interaction; learning new skills and information; making choices; sharing information and giving opinions, and independence. Communication helps our personality shine through and is one of the major ways we connect with the people around us.

When working with children, it is important to provide primary communication partners with modelling and strategies that they can use in everyday natural contexts such as getting dressed, shopping, or walking to the park. The primary caregiver should also be involved in the sessions to ensure the best outcome. The sessions will be designed to be play-based and enjoyable for your child.

Our speech pathologists aim to assess, diagnose, and provide treatment for specific communication difficulties. These may relate to speech clarity, forming sentences, using language effectively to communicate, and social skills such as how to initiate and conclude a conversation or comprehend what is being communicated. Our services also cover written communication needs.

Our goal is to improve communicate, which will in turn enhance participation in social situations and promote social inclusion and community participation. Improved communication can also lead to greater autonomy and self-confidence, allowing individuals to complete tasks independently. In some cases, alternative forms of communication such as gestures, sign language, and communication aims may be necessary, including the use of technology.

If your Speech Pathologist is allocated as your Team Link they will support all of your goals across all areas of development. Your Speech Pathologist will regularly contact your broader team.
